What is Bollo Auto?
Bollo auto is the annual car tax paid by vehicle owners in Italy. It is based on:
- Engine power (kilowatts)
- Environmental category (Euro 3, Euro 6, etc.)
- The region where the car is registered
Unlike insurance, which is tied to use, the bollo applies simply because you own the vehicle. Even if you don’t drive it, you must pay.
Who Pays Bollo Auto?
- Car owners – Italian citizens and foreigners alike.
- Motorcycle owners – Mopeds and scooters under 50cc are exempt, but larger engines require payment.
- Company vehicles – Businesses must pay bollo for their fleets.
How to Check How Much You Owe
The amount changes depending on the car and the region. You can calculate it by:
- Visiting the ACI (Automobile Club d’Italia) website (link at the bottom of the article)
- Using your license plate number on your regional tax portal
- Asking at a local tabacchi or post office
How to Pay Bollo Auto
There are several options:
- Online – Through ACI, your regional website, or the pagoBollo service.
- PagoPA – The digital platform used for Italian public payments.
- Banks and Post Offices – Using F24 or bollettino slips.
- Tabacchi shops – Many tobacconists offer payment services with immediate receipt.
Payments can be done annually, and you’ll usually get a reminder when it’s due.
Deadlines
Bollo auto is generally due by the end of the month following your vehicle’s registration anniversary.
Example: if you bought your car in April, your bollo is due by May 31 each year.
If you forget, you can pay late with penalties (ravvedimento operoso), but the longer you wait, the higher the fine.
Penalties for Non-Payment
Unpaid bollo leads to:
- Late fees and daily interest
- Administrative fines from the regional tax office
- In extreme cases, enforcement by Equitalia (the collection agency)
Bollo auto is a fundamental part of car ownership. Check your region’s website or ACI to avoid missing deadlines.
